ZIK GBEMRE AND HIS CAMPAIGN OF CALUMNY AGAINST GOVERNOR OBOREVWORI

Our attention have been drawn to recent statements credited to Zik Gbemre, who claims to be a coordinator of the Niger Delta Peace Coalition (NDPC), alleging that His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, is stoking ethnic conflict in Warri and playing politics with sensitive community matters.

We wish to categorically state that these allegations are unfounded, misleading, and do not reflect the Governor’s unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and inclusive governance in Delta State.

Governor Oborevwori, since assuming office, has prioritized the peaceful coexistence of all ethnic nationalities in Delta State, with particular attention to the unique diversity of Warri and its environs. The Governor has consistently engaged with traditional rulers, community leaders, and all stakeholders to ensure that the dark days of ethnic strife never return to our beloved state.

It is on record that the Governor has repeatedly called for restraint, dialogue, and mutual respect among all communities, especially during significant cultural and traditional events. Perhaps it would be instructive to call to mind his profound commitment to fairness and equal opportunity to all ethnic nationalities in Delta during his recent STATE OF THE STATE address.

To underscore his respect for all, His Excellency has directed the security agencies to immediately investigate all reported acts of vandalism or provocation during the recent incidents. It is also important to clarify that, at no time did the Governor endorse, support, or encourage any act that could be construed as a threat to peace or a tacit approval of ethnic superiority. The Governor’s role is that of a neutral arbiter and unifier, not a partisan actor in community disputes.

It is also inaccurate and unfair to suggest that the Governor “takes delight in making passive threats” or that he is “playing politics” with the situation. His Excellency has maintained open channels of communication with all traditional institutions in Delta State.

The government is also committed to ensuring that all cultural celebrations in Delta are conducted within the bounds of law, mutual respect, and established traditions. Where infractions occur, the appropriate authorities will investigate and ensure accountability, irrespective of the community involved.

We urge all community leaders, youth groups, and civil society organizations to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric and instead join hands with the state government in building bridges of understanding and cooperation. Delta State is home to all, and the prosperity and security of our people remain the Governor’s utmost priority even as He remains ever committed to attracting investment that could create job opportunities for all.

In conclusion, Governor Oborevwori remains a Governor for all Deltans—Itsekiri, Urhobo, Ijaw, Isoko, Anioma, and every other group. He will not be distracted by unfounded accusations or attempts to politicize communal issues. The administration remains open to dialogue and partnership with all stakeholders to ensure lasting peace and development in Warri and across Delta State.

Signed,
Charles Aniagwu
