Emma Ogidi Takes Charge Of Delta PDP, As S/South Zonal Team Receives Fresh Mandate
Elder Emma Ogidi, the South South Zonal Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been directed to take charge of the party’s affairs in Delta state, following the seeming collapse of the Party, after the shock defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the entire state party structure to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The zonal leadership has been mandated to move into Delta immediately and take stock of all party assets and inventory. The move signals a strong push by the party to restore order and ensure accountability within its Delta chapter.
This follows the Party's decision to put a temporary hold on constituting a state caretaker committee and the interim arrangement is to remain in place pending the constitution of a full caretaker committee to manage the affairs of the PDP in Delta State, ahead of the 2027 election.
The directive was issued by the Acting National Chairman of the party, Ambassador Umar Damagum, at the end of the first National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in response to the political shake-up in Delta, held after the mass defection of Governor Oborevwori, former governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the entire PDP structure to APC.
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP also resolved to mandate its National Legal Adviser to properly look into the implications of Governor Oborevwori's defection to APC, with the intent to “do the needful” not only to define the party's position on the matter, but also in order to assert the PDP’s legal standing and recover party assets.
These decisions were amongst those taken by the party national leadership during a six-hour closed-door meeting at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.
Speaking to the press shortly after the meeting, Elder Ogidi stated that he was ready to work with all remaining loyal stakeholders in the state to rebuild the PDP and reposition it for future electoral contests. He described the current situation as unfortunate but not insurmountable.
The Acting National Chairman noted that the NWC carefully reviewed developments in Delta State and resolved that the zonal leadership must immediately relocate to the state. Their mission, he said, includes taking stock of the party’s inventory and laying the groundwork for recovery and reorganization.
With Emma Ogidi at the helm this intervention is expected to stabilize internal operations and lay the groundwork for a more permanent structure in the coming weeks. Party loyalists are watching closely as developments unfold.
