Of Delta State Debt, DESOPADEC And The Politics Of Uninformed Critics - By Fred Edoreh

Image
By all means, it is the right of citizens to call their governments to account. It reminds leaders that they hold authority and act in trust for the people. However, it is also important for critics to be well informed on the subjects they speak on, otherwise they end up as mere rabble-rousers. While some critics are genuinely intended, there are also those who outrightly set out to mischievously misinform the public, often times to chase clout or aim at scoring partisan goals. It would seem that one Sheriff Mulade belongs to this later category.  His titles alone - Activist, Coordinator (of some ambiguous entity), Comrade Chief, Patron, Ambassador, etc - betray someone most probably suffering from low self-esteem, for which he is psychologically in search of self assurance. Like many of his ilk who misguidedly seek attention through disjointed reasoning and empty braggadocio, he recently flew off his handle to attack the Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, o...

DEEPENING THICK SKIN ON KIDNAP EPIDEMIC - By Pius Mordi

Image
If there was an organisation keeping track of the ballooning count on kidnap in Nigeria, perhaps it would have dawned on the federal government that it has gone beyond the epidemic level. From targeting individuals, abducting families, groups, students and even whole villages have become a past time. Nobody, not government or security agencies, is alarmed any longer. When the first reported mass kidnap of Chibok girls made global news, the shocked world apparently thought it was a one off or a happenstance. For the political class, the Chibok saga was an instrument for political chess game. The then opposition, saw it as a tool to undermine the Goodluck Jonathan administration with the hapless then President complaining that even the security agencies were sabotaging his administration efforts to arrest the crisis in Borno and rescue the Chibok girls.  From the Borno theatre, virtually the entire northern part of the country is now plagued by not routine kidnap but mass abdu...

DELTA @ 33; A TRIBUTE TO THE TEACHER - By Osita Biose

Image
As Delta State marks its 33rd Anniversary it’s not just a time for fanre relegated to the sidelines in a profession that should be celebrated and live comfortably. But for many Nigerian teachers, this dream remains elusive. Teachers in Nigeria operate in a challenging environment. Their salaries are meager, often delayed, and they lack the modern tools needed to teach effectively. Yet, when student performance falters, teachers are the first to be blamed.  Despite these hurdles, they continue to show up, driven by a hope that one day, things might improve. Over the years, the plight of Nigerian teachers has only worsened. The long standing demand for a Teachers’ Salary Structure (TSS), which began in 1992, was finally approved in 2003.  Among the state’s many achievements, one group of unsung heroes stand out as those who have tirelessly shaped the minds and attitudes of generations: the teachers. For over three decades, Delta’s educators have dedicated themselves to molding t...

For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to state categorically that the Delta State Government DID NOT Borrow N40 billion. And the Sheriff Oborevwori administration has not borrowed any dime till now. The records are there for anybody who cares for the truth to verify. Repayable over a five-year period, the loan is to be repaid through direct debits to the Local Government Councils.  For the umpteen t...
