JUST-IN: Atiku Finally Joins ADC
Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria and Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the 2023 general elections, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Atiku made the announcement on Monday through his X handle, posting a photo of himself holding his ADC membership card with the brief caption, “It’s official.”
Atiku, who was the first prominent voice to call for a coalition against the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, had long been linked and associated with the ADC which presently has emerged as the coalition-backed party ahead of the 2027 elections.
News had already filtered into national attention over the weekend that Atiku would officially make his move into ADC today and true to the reports, he has finally pitched tent with ADC.
Recall that Atiku had officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in July this year, amidst the unending crisis within the main opposition party, which many traced to it's presidential primary election in 2022 and provided a very powerful section of the party's membership the excuse to adamantly accuse him of fermenting, to the point of working against his presidential bid and even threatening that there would be no peace or reconciliation if he didn't leave the party.
However, despite his departure in July, the PDP had plunged into further disarray, which culminated in a physical confrontation when mayhem erupted at the national Secretariat between factional group members attempting to take over the Wadata plaza premises.
Atiku Abubakar joins an already formidable array of major players in the Nigerian political space and it is expected that official membership of the ADC would further galvanize more opposition elements as well as disgruntled elements within the ruling party, to flock to ADC in the coming weeks and days.
