DELTA COLLEGE OF NURSING: Health Commissioner Confirms Withdrawal Of Query To Osato Edobor Over Controversial Video Of First Lady's Visit, Says: "We are not victimizing any of the students.”

Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, Delta State Commissioner for Health

The Delta State Government has stepped in to protect a nursing student, Osato Edobor, after a disciplinary query was issued to her for a video she posted during the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu

The video, which has been widely circulated on social media, captured a moment during the First Lady’s visit to Delta State where students appeared to mock her. In the clip, the Master of Ceremony referred to Tinubu as “our mother,” to which the students responded with, “Na your mama be this,” openly rejecting the designation.

Following the incident, the management of the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, Agbor, issued Edobor a query. The provost, Mrs. Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, described the student’s actions—recording and posting the moment on TikTok—as a violation of the institution’s conduct policy. The letter labeled the act as “malicious” and cited rule No. 8 on Page 21 of the Student Handbook, warning Edobor to explain herself in triplicate within 24 hours or face disciplinary action.

In a swift response, the Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, intervened. Speaking in a short video statement, he said:

“On the trending letter that was query issued to the student of the school of nursing, Agbor, I have instructed the provost to withdraw the letter. We don’t want to victimise any of the students. I’ve also reached out to the student in question and the student has confirmed to me that the letter was withdrawn yesterday, last night. So I want the public to be aware of this and there’s calm everywhere. We are not victimising any of the students.”

The directive was also confirmed in a statement posted on the Delta State Government’s official X handle:

“The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, has directed the immediate withdrawal of the query issued to Nursing Student Osato Edobor by the Provost of the School of Nursing Sciences, Agbor.

This decision by the Commissioner for Health stems from a commitment to ensuring that the rights of every student in health sciences and related health programmes are upheld, this way, fostering a conducive learning environment for their academic excellence.”

Sources also hint that school authorities had allegedly asked Edobor to record a video expressing gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his role in resolving the issue. The provost later accused the student of bringing disgrace to the institution and violating the nursing code of conduct by behaving inappropriately while in uniform.
