The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Delta State Chapter, has applauded the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) for conducting a free, fair and credible local government elections in the 25 local government areas of the state.

Speaking at a press conference in Asaba, the IPAC Chairman in the state, Prince Henry Eze said the July 13 local government elections provided a high benchmark for all future local government elections in the state.

Eze said the elections which involved local government council chairmanship candidates and councilors was deemed to be highly successful with high voter turnout with noticed voter apathy in just few areas.

He stated that IPAC, Delta State, in pursuance of their extant functions, carried out a lot of sensitization campaigns in form of road shows, billboards and television appearances to prepare the mood of the electorate for the local government elections.

According to him, the initiative paid off as the local government elections polls recorded significant turnout and observance of the guidelines and regulations.

He added that their accredited election Observers reported some slight skirmishes caused by miscreants in some polling units, stressing that the situations were, however, promptly brought under control.

"While we can give DSIEC thumbs up for substantially arriving early with election materials, there were a few areas where materials arrived slightly late and we hope DSIEC can correct this in future elections.

"On the whole, DSIEC substantially complied by its own laws, timetable and guidelines. It is also observed that the elections were devoid of rancour as there were no incidents of snatching of ballot boxes, vote buying or other untoward irregularities usually associated with elections of this nature.

"We wish to commend DSIEC for conducting a free, fair and credible elections which, to us, provides a high benchmark for all future local government elections in the state, save for some few lapses earlier identified.

"We equally commend the security agencies-the Police, the DSS, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for their high display of professionalism before, during and after the elections. Their superlative conduct provided the much needed peace and security for the election.

"We wish to express our profound appreciation to the political party Chairmen and leadership of IPAC for their maturity throughout the election just as we commend the candidates for playing by the rules and not doing anything to detract from the sanctity of the democratic process.

"Also, we wish to thank the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, as the Chief Security Officer of the State, for providing the overall peaceful ambience for the elections," Eze added.

While urging the losers in the election to congratulate the winners, if they have not done so, the IPAC Chairman encouraged the winners to carry everyone along in grassroots governance to deepen democracy at that level.

"As the elected local government council Chairmen and Councilors resume work in their various local government areas, we believe and hope that they carry out projects and policies that would impact positively on their constituents," he said.
